Abstract

This study explores the reasons behind the lack of flourishing of the Arabic language in the Indian Subcontinent, despite the region’s deep historical ties with Islam and Arabic religious texts. The research identifies several contributing factors, including the dominance of local languages such as Urdu, Persian, and regional vernaculars, the colonial impact on education systems, and the limited integration of Arabic into secular academic curricula. Furthermore, the role of religious institutions, governmental policies, and sociocultural attitudes toward Arabic are examined to understand the challenges faced by the language in gaining widespread use outside religious contexts.
