Abstract

Sustainable economic development is widely regarded as a fundamental pillar for the survival, stability, and progress of any state; however, its attainment is hindered by a range of economic, social, administrative, and ethical barriers. This study provides an analytical examination of these obstacles within an Islamic framework, highlighting that factors such as unemployment, poverty, corruption, economic inequality, and the unjust distribution of wealth significantly disrupt social balance and slow down the development process. Similarly, the lack of investment, low production levels, the decline of industrial and manufacturing sectors, and imbalances in imports and exports weaken a country’s productive capacity and economic self-reliance.

Furthermore, weaknesses in the tax system, shortage of revenue sources, underutilization of available resources, and excessive dependence on foreign aid adversely affect fiscal stability and policy autonomy. At the structural and moral level, interest-based financial systems, corruption, bribery, and extravagant lifestyles of ruling elites undermine public trust and reinforce unequal distribution of resources, thereby widening socio-economic disparities.

Islamic economic principles, based on justice, balance, transparency, and public welfare, offer a comprehensive framework for addressing these challenges. Deviation from these principles contributes to economic instability, inefficiency, and a slowdown in development. Consequently, this study concludes that sustainable economic development can only be achieved when state policies are aligned with both economic reforms and Islamic ethical-economic principles, ensuring the establishment of a just, stable, and self-reliant economic system.
